Breaking the 8GB Mobile Wall: Benchmarking the 12GB RTX 5070 Ti Laptop

For the past three years, mobile AI enthusiasts have been trapped behind an infuriating hardware ceiling: the 8GB VRAM wall.

You could spend $1,600+ on a flagship gaming laptop equipped with an RTX 4060, RTX 4070, or RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, and every single one of them shipped with the exact same 8GB memory buffer. While 8GB is enough to squeeze in a 7B or 8B parameter model at 4-bit quantization, the moment you try to load a 14B reasoning model or expand your context window past 16k tokens, you spill over the PCIe bus into system RAM—and performance falls off a cliff.

Enter our newest addition to The Neural Lab: the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16s AI.

Equipped with an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU (12GB GDDR7) and Intel’s refreshed Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, this machine represents a critical inflection point for mobile workstations: 12GB of dedicated GDDR7 VRAM in a thin-and-light chassis.

We put the Helios Neo 16s through a 4-stage benchmark gauntlet against our Xenon Interceptor (RTX 5060 Laptop 8GB), our Neon Future (RTX 5070 Desktop 12GB), and our Predator Orion (RTX 5070 Desktop 12GB).

Here is what the numbers reveal.

The 4-Stage Lab Gauntlet

All tests were executed locally offline using identical prompts ("Write a 1000 word essay about the future of artificial intelligence.") at 4,096 context length.

Finding 1: The Mobile vs. Desktop Bridge (Llama-3.1-8B)

How does the 12GB RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU stack up against both lower-tier laptops and full-wattage desktop cards when running Llama-3.1-8B?

Lab RigGPU HardwareForm FactorLlama-3.1-8B Speed
Predator OrionRTX 5070 (12GB GDDR7)Desktop108.48 t/s
Neon FutureRTX 5070 (12GB GDDR7)Desktop99.93 t/s
Helios Neo 16sRTX 5070 Ti Laptop (12GB GDDR7)Laptop73.11 t/s
Xenon InterceptorRTX 5060 Laptop (8GB GDDR6)Laptop37.98 t/s

The Helios Neo 16s evaluates prompts at 885.08 tokens/sec and generates tokens at 73.11 tokens/sec—nearly doubling (+92.5%) the output speed of the RTX 5060 Laptop (37.98 t/s). Even more impressively, it delivers nearly 75% of the sustained throughput of a full desktop RTX 5070 while operating inside a thin-and-light laptop thermal envelope.

Finding 2: Surpassing Apple's M4 Max on Gemma-3-4B

In Test 2, we loaded Google’s hyper-efficient Gemma-3-4.3B model to see where the Helios Neo 16s lands on our overall Inference Velocity Leaderboard:

  • Neon Future (RTX 5070 Desktop): 141.78 t/s
  • Helios Neo 16s (RTX 5070 Ti Laptop): 110.25 t/s
  • Silicon Max (Apple M4 Max 64GB): 108.38 t/s
  • Xenon Interceptor (RTX 5060 Laptop): 88.39 t/s
  • Dell G15 Workhorse (RTX 4060 Laptop): 71.89 t/s

At 110.25 tokens/sec (finishing the entire 1,188-token essay in just 10.88 seconds), the Helios Neo 16s edges past our $3,500+ Silicon Max (M4 Max) workstation (108.38 t/s) to take #1 among all laptops and #2 overall across our entire lab fleet.

Finding 3: The 12GB Mobile Miracle (DeepSeek-R1-14B at 39.6 t/s)

Test 3 is where the 12GB GDDR7 frame buffer proves its true worth.

When we tested DeepSeek-R1-8B (the 8-billion parameter distilled reasoning model) on our 8GB Xenon Interceptor, it consumed 7.1 GB of VRAM and ran at 38.34 tokens/sec. That 8GB laptop cannot run the larger 14-billion parameter DeepSeek-R1-14B model in VRAM—trying to load its ~9.0 GB weight file immediately triggers PCIe spillover into system RAM, cratering speeds into the single digits.

On the 12GB Helios Neo 16s, the entire DeepSeek-R1-14B model loads comfortably inside GDDR7 VRAM with room to spare. The result?

It runs DeepSeek-R1-14B at 39.59 tokens/sec (with 71.78 t/s prompt evaluation)—generating 1,922 reasoning and output tokens in just 48.5 seconds.

Think about what that means for developers and researchers: The RTX 5070 Ti Laptop runs a 14B reasoning model faster (39.59 t/s) than an RTX 5060 Laptop runs an 8B model (38.34 t/s). You get a massive upgrade in multi-step logic, coding accuracy, and reasoning depth with zero latency penalty.

Finding 4: Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus CPU-Only Performance

Finally, we blinded Ollama to the NVIDIA GPU (OLLAMA_LLM_LIBRARY="cpu") to isolate Intel’s refreshed Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor running solely on the laptop's stock 16GB DDR5 memory.

  • Prompt Evaluation: 86.48 tokens/sec
  • Token Generation: 11.83 tokens/sec

Even with a modest 16GB system RAM configuration, the mobile Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus outperforms our desktop Core Ultra 7 265KF (78.19 t/s prompt / 11.00 t/s generation) and easily clears the human reading speed threshold (~5–7 tokens/sec). However, comparing its prompt evaluation (86.48 t/s) against the 32GB Xenon Interceptor's Core Ultra 9 275HX (263.83 t/s) highlights an important hardware note: upgrading the Helios Neo 16s from 16GB to a 32GB dual-channel DDR5 kit is the single best aftermarket upgrade you can make if you plan on running hybrid CPU/RAM workloads.

The Verdict: The New Mobile Sweet Spot

If you are shopping for a laptop specifically for local AI development, autonomous agents, or coding assistants in late 2026, do not settle for 8GB of VRAM.

The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16s AI proves that 12GB of GDDR7 mobile VRAM is the new sweet spot for portable AI—delivering 107 t/s on small models, nearly 70 t/s on 8B models, and unlocking native 38+ t/s inference on 14B reasoning models without ever touching the wall outlet of a desktop tower.
